Spyridon Nikolaou

Mr. Spyridon Nikolaou is a Lecturer of Informatics with specialization in Computer Networks, at the Department of Informatics of the University of Western Macedonia (UOWM). He received his B.Sc. degree in Informatics in 1994, from the Department of Informatics of the Technological Education Institute of Athens, and M.Sc. degree in Electronic Information Management in 1997, from the Department of Information Studies, University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, with annual scholarship granted by the Hellenic National Documentation Centre (NDC). From 015 to date, he’s a member of the academic staff (Lecturer) of the Joint M.Sc. Program in “Modern Information Technologies and Services” co-organized from the Department of Informatics of the University of Western Macedonia and the Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus. He is a member of the Laboratory of Telecommunications, Networks and Distributed Systems at the Department of Informatics of the University of Western Macedonia.

Currently he is a PhD candidate and member of the research team of the Laboratory of Internet & Telecommunication Systems, Services and Security, at the Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus. His research interests focus on Fifth Generation (5G) Cognitive Radio Communications and Software Defined Networks design, performance and security issues evaluation, as well as 5G Mobile Network services and Multimedia Technologies. He has published two peer-review conference papers, in related research fields. He served as program committee member and as a reviewer in two national and two international scientific conferences. He participated in four national research programs, as a member of the main research team.

Mr. Spyridon Nikolaou has five years of professional working experience as a senior telecom engineer in ERICSSON S.A., a leading multinational telecommunication equipment company, working on design, implementation and support of integrated solutions for mobile cellular networks (GSM, GPRS, WCDMA/UMTS) as well as PSTN telecommunications fixed backbone networks, in Greece (OTE/COSMOTE, Vodafone, Wind, Q-Telecom) and Cyprus (CYTA).

He has more than fifteen years of ICT teaching experience in Tertiary Education (Department of Informatics Engineering of Technological Education Institute of Western Macedonia) as an Adjunct Lecturer (Feb 2004 – Nov 2008), and as Lecturer of Informatics (Nov 2008 – June 2019) with specialization in Computer Networks.

He is affiliated certified CCNA instructor of the Cisco Networking Academy. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Greek Computer Society.
